How to add AMP to your WordPress Website
Before we learn about integrating accelerated mobile pages to our blog posts, let us learn about what is AMP.
WHAT IS AMP ( Accelerated Mobile Pages)
AMP is an open-source library that provides an easy way to develop web pages that are lightweight, smooth, and load at a faster rate compared to a regular CSS page. AMP pages are just web pages that you can link to and are controlled by you.
However, every coin has two sides. Similarly, even AMP has its advantages and disadvantages.
Pros of AMP
- Rank your website in Google at a higher position vs non-AMP blogs
- The efficient user experience for the users even on slower internet connection speed
Cons of AMP
- Limited widget functionality
- Sliders and other animations are not supported
- Fewer adds are displayed
Setting up Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) on WordPress Site
The first thing you need is to install and activate a plugin called AMP WP – Google AMP For WordPress.
Once active, go the Configure General Settings as shown in the image below.
Choose the options you wish to configure and once you are finished, click on save changes.
After that go to the Layout tab and again select the configuration you like.
Now comes the final stage where you can customise your WordPress blog. To do that, Go to the Customize App Theme and select the layout you desire.
Adjust the customisation as you wish, as there is not standard procedure to setup AMP themes and AMP pages.
*Note: All your animations, sliders and other custom styles will be lost once you activate amp accelerated mobile pages.
To check if AMP is active or not, visit your website from a smartphone and check the layout or check the URL. For instance, your WordPress sites URL should be yousite.com/amp.
Note: To Deactivate AMP, Go to the plugin section in your Dashboard and deactivate AMP plugin.
